Guild Ethos & Interpretations

Tc's thoughts on the ethos

I'm going to state them and then supply a practical definition.

1. Wizards are honest, thoughtful and respectful towards others at all times.
This means Wizards should not be involved in shout wars demeaning other people from outside  the guild. If you have a problem with that person, respectfully direct your attention to  them privately.

2. Wizards are neither superior nor inferior to another person. All persons are different and offer a unique insight.
EVERYONE has the right to live and play in Terris. Each person's opinions mean JUST as much  as yours do. This includes every race from Goblins to the Gatekeeper and every guild from Barbarians to Knights.

3. Wizards practice the light side of magic. Greed and personal advancement at the cost of others are not concepts practiced by Wizards.
Ambition is a good thing to have, but not when you are willing to do anything to get what
you want.

4. Wizards are committed to learning and perfecting the Art of Magic.
This is pretty straightforward. Strive always to better yourself.

5. Wizards are urged to become friends with all in the Guild. We uniteunder a common name and purpose. Together, as comrades, we shall further everyone's understanding and satisfaction of the World.
Dont be condescending to anyone in the guild. Everyone is equal. This is a very important part of the ethos. It has to be, it is stated twice, only this one is more specific than
number 2.

6. Treat the Guild as family.
Again It is stated, be friendly within the guild to all.

7. Wisdom is the greatest asset a Guild can have. Through Wisdom and knowledge, comes power. The power to assist all those around us. Wizards are encouraged to learn from each other, to support each others quests for knowledge.
Strive to further your knowledge of the world around you, but that is not Wisdom. Wisdom is  having knowledge and knowing what to do with it. Further your knowledge of magic, but know what you need to do with that knowledge and what is best left undone.

8. Wizards know that the experience is best gained through personal achievement or cooperation within a group. Experience "earned" by hanging on to someone's coattails may increase your abilities but not your Wisdom.
Dont ask for quest answers. You will not get them in this guild. Again, cooperation within the guild is a key part of this part of the ethos, as is knowledge.

9. A Wizard shall not inhibit another wizard's opportunity at achieving wisdom by giving out quest answers, though vague hints to the weary adventurer are permitted.
AGAIN: DO NOT GIVE OUT QUEST ANSWERS! Sheesh, how many times do I have to tell you?

10. Wizards do their best to support the Guild and its members, providing The Wizard's Ethos is not broken in the process. Wizards are encouraged to share their ideas for and with the Guild.
Wow, this is getting a little redundant, isn't it? Respect the other members of the guild, even you dont get along with them.

11. Wizards air their grievances within the confines of the Guild. Public displays of disunity do not advance the guild and do not rectify the situation. A civilized meeting with Patrons and Leaders will solve difficulties far more effectively.
If you have a serious problem with someone within the guild, I would encourage you to privately approach that person and try to talk it out. If that is unsuccessful, take your case to a GO and If your argument is just, a GO will accompany you to talk it out with them. If all these steps are taken and no progress made, The Hero and Patron will surely have a little more impact upon the person. Again, they will accompany YOU to talk it out. Please see what I am saying: This is YOUR problem. YOU need to work it out, although you may need some help.

12. The Ethos is the summation of a way of life, not hard and fast rules. A Wizard interprets the above and applies its spirit, not its word
In other words, these are not requirements that are set before you saying: to be a wizard  you MUST... Be friendly CHECK! and TADA! you are a Wizard. A wizard is someone who looks at  these ethos and thinks "What a waste of time, I know all that in my heart."
