Guild
Ethos & Interpretations
Rora's
thoughts on the ethos
1.
Wizards are honest, thoughtful and respectful towards others at all times.
I only have this to add. This does not mean simply your elders. This means all
members of
the guild, and anyone you may come across in the lands as a whole. Guildmasters
should be
treated with respect, as well as the newest member to walk the lands. Everyone
is a part of this land, and as such, should be treated with regard.
2. Wizards are neither superior nor inferior to another person. All persons are
different
and offer a unique insight.
Although you may think you know “everything”, there will usually be someone out
there who
knows something you don’t. Don’t close doors to what could be useful
information, even if
you don’t think the person will know.
3. Wizards practice the light side of magic. Greed and personal advancement at
the cost of
others are not concepts practiced by Wizards.
Wizards should use their magic to help others within the lands, as well as
themselves. You
should not use your magic to hurt others. If you are unsure if something you are
planning on
doing may or may not hurt someone else, simply ask. That’s what Guild Officers
are here for.
4. Wizards are committed to learning and perfecting the Art of Magic.
Wizards are exactly that, Wizards. We are a lot of other things, but first and
foremost we
are spell casters. Our primary goal in this guild is to learn the magic we need
to
accomplish our wildest dreams.
5. Wizards are urged to become friends with all in the Guild. We unite under a
common name
and purpose. Together, as comrades, we shall further everyone's understanding
and
satisfaction of the World.
One of the best ways to learn things is from your friends, and what better place
to make
friends than in your guild? We have a common goal of learning all we can about
magic and the
ways of our guild.
6. Treat the Guild as family.
I have always felt this meant that even if you don’t get along with everyone in
the guild,
make sure you treat each member with the respect they deserve. If a member of
the guild asks
you for help, and it does not go against any other part of the Ethos, help them.
7. Wisdom is the greatest asset a Guild can have. Through Wisdom and knowledge,
comes power,
the power to assist all those around us. Wizards are encouraged to learn from
each other, to
support each others quests for knowledge.
Never quell someone’s search for knowledge, instead nourish their desire to
better
themselves as they may return the favor in the future. True knowledge gives true
wisdom.
8. Wizards know that the experience is best gained through personal achievement
or
co-operation within a group. Experience "earned" by hanging on to someone's
coattails may
increase your abilities but not your Wisdom.
Although you may think it easier to simply show a guild member what to do, or to
show them
where to go, it is better for them if you give a hint or tell them it’s better
to find out
on their own.
9. A Wizard shall not inhibit another wizard's opportunity at achieving wisdom
by giving out
quest answers, though vague hints to the weary adventurer are permitted.
I usually explain this one with number eight, since I believe they mean almost
the same.
Give someone a hint; don’t rob them of their learning experience.
10. Wizards do their best to support the Guild and its members, providing The
Wizard's Ethos
is not broken in the process. Wizards are encouraged to share their ideas for
and with the
Guild.
By all means, let the guild officers know if you have any ideas you think would
make the
guild better. We are not infallible, and we do take suggestions. I, for one,
love to get
ideas from guild members on things the Dragon Alliance and the guild as a whole
can do. It’s
fun to involve guild members in the planning of an event.
11. Wizards air their grievances within the confines of the Guild. Public
displays of
disunity do not advance the guild and do not rectify the situation. A civilized
meeting with
Patrons and Leaders will solve difficulties far more effectively.
The Guild is a family, and as such, I believe we should keep our problems within
the family.
To that end, I don’t think anyone who would bring our internal problems out into
public
forums is working for the guild, but instead working toward their own means.
12. The Ethos is the summation of a way of life, not hard and fast rules. A
Wizard
interprets the above and applies its spirit, not its word.
We are all individuals and we read words and passages in different ways.
Although we do see
the Ethos in different ways, the differences shouldn’t be so much that one
Wizard thinks
another is breaking the Ethos when that Wizard does not think so. To that end,
if you have a
problem with how a part of the Ethos has been interpreted by anyone, let that
guild member
know and perhaps the two of you can get into a discussion about the aspects of
the guild you
may or may not like. Perhaps you will build a long lasting friendship from it,
and perhaps
not. Either way, you will both be better Wizards for sitting down and discussing
it.
