Guild Ethos & Interpretations

Blackwing's thoughts on the ethos

A Wizard is one that joins The Wizards Guild. Regardless of profession, they become Wizards and strive to perfect the Art of Magic in all its forms. Perfection is the goal that all aspire, though it is recognized few will achieve.
"We as wizards seek the pursuit of knowledge and magic, attempting to learn all we can and learn to access magic in its purest form"

The Guild does not dictate how members should behave. We are a guild with broad membership that has many differing views on life. However, there is a commonality that draws people together under the umbrella of Wizards. Those with widely differing views to these may find they are better served by another guild.
"The guild accepts people from all walks of life. Yet we all unite with the common goal of learning about magic and helping one another"

1. Wizards are honest, thoughtful and respectful towards others at all times.
"Wizards should attempt to be the helping hand. Those whom others can rely on no matter the circumstances"

2. Wizards are neither superior nor inferior to another person. All persons are different
and offer a unique insight.
"We as wizards treat everyone as an equal. Everyone has something to offer"

3. Wizards practice the light side of magic. Greed and personal advancement at the cost of
others are not concepts practiced by Wizards.
"Again, we seek to learn about magic and how all can benefit from magic, not just oneself"

4. Wizards are committed to learning and perfecting the Art of Magic.
"Learning all there is to magic is more than a lifetimes work. Seeking it out in its purest, unpolluted form and how to access that said magic"

5. Wizards are urged to become friends with all in the Guild. We unite under a common name and purpose. Together, as comrades, we shall further everyone's understanding and
satisfaction of the World.
"We seek to learn and help others. And in doing so we be-friend others. Magic is a wondrous thing, and it should be shared by all in the lands"

6. Treat the Guild as family.
"The guild is a place we all meet under one common theme. But we learn together, we share in our successes and comfort each other when in defeat. We are always there for each other."

7. Wisdom is the greatest asset a Guild can have. Through Wisdom and knowledge, comes power. The power to assist all those around us.Wizards are encouraged to learn from each other, to support each others quests for knowledge.
"I’m probably going to start sounding redundant, but higher understanding of magic can only come through wisdom and knowledge. We seek out the purest form of magic and we seek to understand the meaning of it and how to utilize it. And as wizards, we seek to help one another and not just ourselves."

8. Wizards know that the experience is best gained through personal achievement or
co-operation within a group. Experience "earned" by hanging on to someone's coattails may
increase your abilities but not your Wisdom.
"It is said a person can be intelligent, but lack the wisdom of how to use that knowledge. If a wizard does not learn for himself, he will never truly understand why his magic works or what to do in certain situations. Learn by doing, do by learning."

9. A Wizard shall not inhibit another wizard's opportunity at achieving wisdom by giving out quest answers, though vague hints to the weary adventurer are permitted.
"See the statement to #8. If we give out answers, the person will not learn anything. And even though they could be a high level, they will be weak for they will not know what to do."

10. Wizards do their best to support the Guild and its members, providing The Wizard's Ethos is not broken in the process. Wizards are encouraged to share their ideas for and with the Guild.
"We all do what we can for the guild, and taking the meaning of the ethos to heart we try to live our lives. And only by sharing with the guild can it grow and improve. If none of us did anything for the guild it would whither up and die."

11. Wizards air their grievances within the confines of the Guild. Public displays of
disunity do not advance the guild and do not rectify the situation. A civilized meeting with
Patrons and Leaders will solve difficulties far more effectively.
"What will get the quickest resolution to a conflict. Arguing and fighting over some issue  or sitting down and peacefully working out the situation and coming to an agreement. Arguing only adds fuel to the fire, making it bigger than it really is. Patrons and Leaders act as peace keepers and will see to both sides issues to help in solving the problem"

12. The Ethos is the summation of a way of life, not hard and fast rules. A Wizard
interprets the above and applies its spirit, not its word.
"It’s the meaning that is important, and not the terms and phrasing"
